The Fabricator Who Braved the Cold: Iwan Kelly's Year-Long Cold Water Swimming Challenge
Iwan Kelly, Fabricator at Global Energy Group Fabrication, is a man who loves a challenge! In early 2022, he set himself a target of completing one cold water swim per week for an entire year. Despite the chilly temperatures, he visited Aberdeen beach every Friday after work, determined to see his goal through to the end. Having braved the cold waters of the North Sea 52 times, Iwan completed his year-long challenge on Friday 6th January 2023.
Iwan Kelly, said: "It's incredible how much self-discovery there is in wild swimming. Dipping into the icy depths of the North Sea — aware of all the dangers — was a test of both body and mind, but the feeling of accomplishment that came with it is indescribable. I’ve recommended it to my work colleagues numerous times!”
Iwan has worked at Global Energy Group Fabrication for just over four years. In October 2022, he completed a modern fabrication apprenticeship through Tullos Training Centre. The four-year course consisted of on-the-job training, allowing him to gain the experience, skills and knowledge to achieve an NC & SCQF LEVEL 3 in Fabrication & Welding .
Dave Masson, Managing Director, said: “Iwan's dedication and hard work paid off, as he graduated with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in his field. His determination to succeed in both his work and his personal pursuits is truly admirable. We value his effort and will support Iwan to further his fabrication career within the group.”
Iwan Kelly, added: “The apprenticeship program gave me the opportunity to start my career in fabrication, and I feel like I now have a well-rounded skill set to take on any challenge – like the wild swimming! I worked really hard over the 4 years, becoming more confident and skilled. I’m now looking forward to broadening my capabilities over the coming years, which will hopefully lead to opportunities to progress up the ladder.”
