Delivering Tomorrow’s Energy: Highlights from Global Energy Group’s 2024 Achievements

As 2024 draws to a close, we look back on an incredible year of progress and achievement at Global Energy Group. This year has seen us reach significant milestones, strengthening our commitment to driving the energy transition and delivering tomorrow’s energy infrastructure.

A key highlight from 2024 was the successful completion of OW Ocean Winds UK's 882MW Moray West Offshore Wind Farm, a project where we played an integral role across multiple work scopes. The Port of Nigg served as the primary facility for the pre-assembly and marshalling of Transition Pieces (TPs) and Wind Turbine Generators (WTGs), including blades, towers, and nacelles.

The Moray West project saw our fabrication division at Nigg manufacture two J-Tube Cages, which are essential components for protecting cables connecting offshore substation platforms to turbines, as well as the cables exporting the power to shore. Additionally, our subsidiary Global Port Services, provided critical onsite support to the offshore wind project, including craneage, logistics, mounting ancillary equipment, and inspection and repair services.

To date, Global Energy Group has supported the deployment of over 3.5GW of offshore wind assets through the Port of Nigg, highlighting our world-class facility, integrated services, and expertise in this growing sector.

On the theme of fabrication, our divisions operating from Nigg, Invergordon, and Aberdeen continued their success in the oil and gas subsea market, undertaking multiple projects for our long-established clients. This sector remains vital for our business, providing long-term employment opportunities and maintaining our reputation for delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

Another milestone in 2024 was progressing our ‘West Quay Deepwater Expansion’ project at the Port of Nigg into Stage 2 of the Scottish Offshore Wind Energy Council’s (SOWEC) Strategic Investment Model (SIM). The SIM initiative is working to address the growing demand for larger deep-water facilities to support the UK’s expanding offshore renewables industry, and we are delighted that our proposal for Nigg has been included within the next stage.

In May, we celebrated the groundbreaking of Sumitomo Electric’s £350 million state-of-the-art subsea cable manufacturing facility adjacent to the Port of Nigg. As the largest inward investment in the Scottish Highlands, this development will boost the UK’s electricity grid and renewable energy infrastructure. We are proud to serve as Sumitomo’s local industrial partner, supporting the creation of hundreds of high-value, sustainable jobs in the region and taking important step towards Scotland’s transition to a net zero economy.

The Port of Nigg achieved significant milestones this year as part of the Inverness & Cromarty Firth Green Freeport (ICFGF) initiative. The designation of Special Tax Site, coupled with Customs Site Operator and Approved Economic Operator status, marked critical steps in unlocking the Green Freeport’s economic and environmental benefits.

Nigg’s strategic importance in the national energy landscape attracted visits from prominent figures, including Scotland’s First Minister John Swinney and then UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

In September, when our Chairman, Roy MacGregor OBE, was honoured with the ‘Outstanding Contribution to the Regional Economy of the Highlands & Islands’ award at the Prosper Highlands & Islands Business Excellence Awards. This award recognises his four decades of leadership, which have significantly increased investment, created jobs, and positioned the Highlands as a key player in Scotland’s energy transition.

Safety remains at the core of all our operations, and this year, Global Energy Services achieved a remarkable achievement: 10 years without any lost time incidents. This milestone reflects our unwavering commitment to a robust health and safety culture, upheld by every member of our team.

Another proud moment came in October, when we further strengthened our presence in Aberdeen with the opening of a new central office shared with our subsidiary, Apollo. This move enhances collaboration between the businesses and our ability to deliver integrated, end-to-end energy solutions.

2024 was a particularly busy year for our Global Crane Services and Global Wind Projects businesses, with increasing activity in the renewable sector, supporting numerous installation & maintenance projects throughout the UK. Most notably this year, the businesses partnered with DSV Air & Sea to deliver installation solutions for a bespoke Kone Goliath overhead crane project in Glasgow.

At Global Energy Group, we are committed to investing in our people and creating opportunities for staff development throughout the organisation. This year we celebrated the second cohort of participants in our ‘Emerging Leader Programme’. The course has been developed to provide future leaders with insights into leadership styles and techniques, building innovation and excellence within our organisation. Congratulations to all 14 participants for their dedication and contributions.

None of these achievements would have been possible without the hard work and commitment of our exceptional teams, the trust of our valued customers, the support of our reliable suppliers, and the collaboration of our stakeholders.

Our heartfelt thanks go out to everyone who has played a role in our success this year and we look forward to the opportunities and challenges of the year ahead. From all of us at Global Energy Group, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
